What is faith? What keeps us going even through difficulties. Beginning with Abraham in Romans and then on to many others in Hebrews 11 we look at what makes great faith, and that to which it points.

What came first circumcision/the law, or faith in Abraham’s life? What made him righteous? Moralistic observance of the law? Or, just believing the promises of God? To the surprise of Paul’s contemporaries, and especially the Jewish background believers, we find that Abraham was a Gentile when he was made righteous in God’s sight. He simply believed God, and righteousness was credited to him. This has profound implications for us today in how we live. Will we be a moralistic judgmental people like the Judaizers Paul argued against in Romans & Galatians? Or, will we live out of the freedom found through the righteousness which is by faith in Christ alone?

What would the father of the Jewish faith, Abraham, or David, the great king, have to say towards Paul’s ongoing argument that it is faith & not works which makes us rightly related to God? How old is the Gospel? Did it start when Jesus came, or did it come beforehand? These questions are explored in this weeks sermon from Romans 4.

Curt Thompson Guest Sermon

Speaker:
Curt Thompson
Passage:
Matthew 4:23 - 5:12 (NIV) Read...

We enjoyed an engaging, challenging sermon from guest speaker Curt Thompson author of The Anatomy of the Soul and The Soul of Shame. He used the Beatitudes (Matthew 4:23-5:12) as a jumping off point for his message. Unfortunately the audio recording for the sermon was corrupted and we are unable to post the sermon at this time. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. We will post any accompanying  text or information to to this location if it becomes available, so check back.

There are usually two kinds of people in relation to God. Those who think they’ve earned their favor with God, and those who think they have to still earn favor with Him. Both are born out of pride. However, God always injects a ‘but’ into our processes. But...a righteousness is being revealed that has nothing to do with our striving, or lack of striving, it is rather by faith. Let’s see what Paul says about this at the end of Romans 3.

Like the police handcuffing a person who’s gone off their rocker, it’s a wake up call which will hopefully lead to repentance & change in a persons life. The Law of God, therefore, was put into place in order to wake us up to our need of salvation - it’s like looking in a mirror & seeing the real you. Without that reflection you’d never see how dirty you really are. The Law is equated with a pedagogue, a teacher, who takes you by the hand leading you in understanding to Christ. The mirror has no power to cleanse you, rather it can only reveal what you really are. Are the issues explored in this weeks sermon. u

Does our church heritage, tradition, and the means of Grace available to us drive us deeper into relationship with Jesus? Or, do we rest on our laurels, in a false security of relationship without concern to our heart & life before Him? These are the questions explored this week in Romans 3:1-8.

The question everyone is asking is what will fulfill me? But the real question is who? The tomb is empty, the promises are not - Christ Lives! In this sermon we compare the similarities between the inner sanctum of the Holy of Holies & the Ark of the Covenant with Christ’s tomb & resurrection.

Jesus entered Jerusalem at the onset of Passover, as the Passover Lamb, yet facing people with faulty hopes, and selfish hearts. What he came to bring was not what they’d expected. Yet, he gave His all, will we recognize the time of God’s visitation; his gift in Christ? Will we eat the whole Passover meal, or only the choicest parts?
