It’s time to wake up from our slumber. To put on the armor of light, which is to clothe ourselves with Christ. To choose sides, and begin to fight the spiritual battle for the sake of Christ’s name among the nations!

We get ourselves in trouble when we do not follow our King’s model of love. When we put too much trust in worldly politics and ways of coercion. How can we practically live in two worlds, under a worldly government, but subject to the kingdom of God?

We tend to reserve our flowers for the dead. Instead, we should be in the habit of giving our flowers to the living. Flowers of encouragement, hospitality, small & great loving actions as seen in our giving and demeanor. Loving so well we don’t even need to say the word for people to know they are loved. Following the example of Christ as he loved others to see the nations of the world know his grace & mercy in the cross, and his provision in the resurrection.

As we submit ourselves fully to Christ in our call to bring the simple Gospel to the nations, how are we to operate? This is a communal effort. To do this together, pride must be eradicated, and humility must reign. Differences within our ranks, or displayed through the nations before us, should not bring fear. Rather we should embrace them, and keep our eyes focused on the true calling of the church.

Romans 12:1-2 is a familiar passage. In offering our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy & pleasing to God, it becomes our true & proper worship, to not conform to the pattern of this world, but we’re transformed by the renewing of our minds. Instead of listening to groupthink, we listen to God-think (God’s will) which leads us to the final end of understanding our purpose - to reach all people groups in this world for Christ!

We never want to make the same mistake twice. Israel had disregarded God’s righteousness, and as a result His call. In our Christian subculture, it is possible to do the same, and Paul warns us of this in Chapter 11.

Scripture from beginning to end communicates the Gospel in simplicity. Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus, and the Church is called to bring that message to all people groups of the world. This began with the call to Abraham in Genesis 12 and extends to us today (Matthew 24:14, 28:19-20). Yet, we often commit the sin of the Great Omission instead of practicing the Great Commission. How have we added to the Gospel, making it unattainable to others? Or, how have we gotten hung up on issues making them larger than they were intended to be, and therefore, missed the call of God to the people groups of the world as the Church? These questions are addressed in todays sermon.

Israel had become complacent & nationalistic. Thinking righteousness was obtained by merely being Jewish, and attained through following the Law. Paul longs for Israel to have know God’s grace through faith in Jesus in all their tradition & Scriptures. The majority had not, which cut them off from salvation, but does this negate their elect status, and nullify the Promise of God? Paul says no. We explore these thoughts as we finish out Romans 9.

As we listen to Paul’s heart & teaching. Do we assimilate it? Allowing it to pierce our hearts & transform our daily lives? Or do we disregard it as outdated and no longer applicable? Do we practice tradition without understanding meaning? Do we come to church trying to twist & bend Scripture to say what we want it to say? Picking & choosing only that which we like, and throwing out the rest? Or, do we take it at face value for what it is, since we realize this is God’s word to us, Jesus is Lord, and the only way to true salvation?
