Just two chapters before these people had been enslaving one another & exacting usury over the vulnerable. Now they’re unified & gathered at the Water Gate, hungry & thirsty for the Word of God. God has waited patiently for this moment as He has pursued his people through this process! What an encouraging picture chapter 8 of Nehemiah is, let’s look together!  Below is also a link to the famous "Dobule Rainbow" video that Jason referenced in the sermon.

Construction to Re-instruction

Construction on the walls & gates have been completed. Nehemiah now begins rebuilding community. The construction had brought them together as a people of common faith, now they continue to reconstruct this crippled faith community; construction to re-instruction. These people had been formerly a part of the Babylonian Captivity which lasted about 70 years. They’d been taken captive & the Temple had been destroyed - they’d been ravaged & enslaved. They’d lost all sense of spiritual identity as the people of God but under Nehemiah’s lead they are being resurrected once again!

Nehemiah expertly navigates the storm of spiritual attack. And we learn that at times we just need not listen or engage with those inward or outward voices which seek to mislead or harm us. They may be voices in our own thinking, or voices from enemies, and even voices of friends & family who are not seeing clearly themselves - and we need to Trust the Holy Spirit to lead us through these times under good counsel of the Word & strong discipleship relationships.

A Great Work, A Great God, A Great Cry

Sometimes a great work, for a great God, reveals a great cry, due to a great sin. In our communal walk, sometimes our work uncovers longstanding wrongs which need to be dealt with in order for us to get back on task of kingdom building among the nations. But with sacrificial leaders modeling well, we can recover and get back to what God has called us to - today we look at Nehemiah 5 seeing this in action.

We’re called to be disciples who disciple. We work at the kingdom of God aware of imminent spiritual attack at all times with a sword in one hand, and a trowel in the other - Prayer & Preparedness! We are called to build each other up in the faith, working as a spiritual community, so in our overall calling to reach the People Groups of the world, we must work towards our own spiritual formation together through the very practical means of discipling one another. Let’s see how Nehemiah 4 reflects all this.

The Gates in the wall of Jerusalem represent various truths for us. If the gates of our lives are in disrepair we are not fully operating as we should be. Let’s explore what these Gates mean to us, and talk more about how we begin to repair them in order to live out our calling & in abundance!

Churches die when people expect all ministry to be done by ‘the church’ or by ‘the clergy’. Ministry is a communal effort, where we serve organically & work together well realizing God has strategically place us in this place to finish the task of kingdom building. Therefore, churches thrive when everyone sees themselves as a contributing part of the church, and acts accordingly.

In Nehemiah 2 we see Nehemiah as a man of Burden, Credibility, Prayer & Faithful Action. God has laid a foundation for this great work ahead of him, and Nehemiah in trust walks through the open doors God provides despite opposition & threat. What can we learn from a man like this in our own church context?

This is the start of our series exploring the work of Nehemiah, who was called back to Jerusalem to rebuild the walls. The city lay bare to attack, and from this we draw parallels to our lives. How we have broken down walls, and are now open to harmful attack. We need to develop steps to rebuild in order to set healthy boundaries in life. Walls to guard our hearts in good ways & allow the right people through their gates in healthy life-giving ways. Join us in the coming weeks as we explore this book thoroughly.

In the exciting short book of Haggai, we see God’s call on Israel to get back to the building of his HOUSE. And in it we see parallels to ourselves in 2017, how we are called away from building our own kingdom, and back to the building of God’s. Join us as we explore this vital short story in the history of Israel, and what it means to us now as the Church of God.
